Summary
We carried out an unannounced inspection in conjunction with an acute services inspection to Gilbert Bain Hospital, NHS Shetland on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 of June 2026 using our safe delivery of care inspection methodology. We inspected the maternity unit and Northern Star which is a designated area to provide bereavement care.
During our inspection, we:
- inspected the ward and hospital environment
- observed staff practice and interactions with women, such as during mealtimes
- spoke with women, visitors and ward staff and
- accessed women’s records, monitoring reports, policies and procedures.
Our findings
This inspection resulted in nine areas of good practice, two recommendations and 11 requirements.
