Summary
We carried out an unannounced inspection in conjunction with a maternity services inspection to Gilbert Bain Hospital, NHS Shetland on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 June 2026 using our safe delivery of care inspection methodology. We inspected the following areas:
- Ambulatory Care/Day Surgery Unit
- Emergency department
- Renal Ward
- Ward 1
- Ward 3
During our inspection, we:
- inspected the ward and hospital environment
- observed staff practice and interactions with patients, such as during patient
mealtimes - spoke with patients, visitors and ward staff and
- accessed patients’ health records, monitoring reports, policies and procedures.
Our findings
This inspection resulted in eight areas of good practice, three recommendations and 13 requirements.
