Delayed discharge

Explore the current work underway to reduce delayed discharges within mental health, learning disabilities and adults with incapacity across Scotland.

What is a delayed discharge?

A delayed discharge happens when someone is ready to leave hospital but cannot do so because:

  • the right support is not yet available at home or in the community
  • a suitable care placement has not been found
  • discharge planning is not yet complete

Improving discharges

By improving the way discharges are planned and supported, we can:

  • make sure people spend less time in hospital
  • help them return to their own home or community sooner
  • ensure hospital care is available for those who need it most
