Summary
We carried out an unannounced maternity services inspection in conjunction with a hospital safe delivery of care inspection to Western Isles Hospital, NHS Western Isles on Monday 13 to Tuesday 14 October 2025 using our safe delivery of care inspection methodology. We inspected the following areas during the maternity inspection: Combined antenatal, postnatal ward and labour suite.
During our inspection, we:
- inspected the ward and hospital environment
- observed staff practice and interactions with women such as during mealtimes
- spoke with women, visitors and ward staff
- accessed women’s health records, monitoring reports, policies and procedures
As part of our inspection, we also asked NHS Western Isles to provide evidence of its policies and procedures relevant to this inspection. The purpose of this is to limit the time the inspection team is onsite, reduce the burden on ward staff and to inform the
virtual discussion session.
Our findings
This inspection resulted in nine areas of good practice, one recommendation and 11 requirements.
