Summary
Healthcare Improvement Scotland is developing national standards to support the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred of care across the urgent and unscheduled care pathway. The standards will be aligned with national and regional work.
Following a scoping engagement period, the final scope has been agreed by the development group. We are now developing the standards. The standards development group includes wide strategic and operational representation from across urgent and unscheduled care. This includes clinical, nursing and allied health professionals from primary care, front door services, out of hours services.
We will also actively engage with people who access urgent and unscheduled care, their carers and staff delivering services. The group is co-chaired by: Caroline Whitworth, Medical Director and Consultant in Renal Medicine at NHS Lothian and Lesley Sharkey, Nurse Director – Acute Care at NHS Tayside.
We expect to publish the standards for consultation in Spring 2027 for an eight-week consultation. It is anticipated that the final standards will be published in Autumn 2027.
