Media Note: Paracetamol and Pregnancy

Posted on:

SIGN, part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland, has issued a statement to ensure that healthcare professionals, patients and the public are provided with the best evidence for practice regarding the use of paracetamol in pregnancy.

The statement confirms the position of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the medicines regulatory body for the UK, that taking paracetamol during pregnancy remains safe.

SIGN helps improve the quality of health care for patients in Scotland by reducing variation in practice and outcome, through the development and dissemination of national clinical guidelines containing recommendations for effective practice based on current evidence.

MHRA, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and BUMPS (Best use of medicines in pregnancy) agree that paracetamol remains the recommended pain relief during pregnancy when used as directed.
