On Wednesday 30 October, our Mental Health and Substance Use team hosted an online clinical network webinar. This webinar focused on Caring for Co-occurring Conditions and explored:

  • treating co-occurring substance use and mental health problems.
  • alcohol detoxification.

The presentations discussed the conceptual framework for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. The presentation acknowledged the challenges whilst highlighting drugs and co-morbidities services should know about. A forthcoming publication on Co-existing Substance Use and Mental health problems (CoSUM) from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, scheduled for Spring 2025, was also described.

An overview of alcohol detox, both at home and in the community, was given and an explanation on why services use the medication they do and how it works was provided.
