On Wednesday 3 December 2025, the Mental Health and Substance Use team hosted a joint online national learning webinar with Suicide Prevention Scotland. This webinar focused on care, recovery, and suicide prevention, highlighting how to support families and carers and social relationships. The event covered:

  • good practice for involving families and carers in clinical assessment and care planning, when self-harm, suicidality and/or substance use are active factors for the person seeking clinical support and treatment,
  • the importance of supporting and involving families, carers and nominated persons in improving outcomes and supporting social relationships,
  • the ‘Triangle of Care’ approach, including an example of how this is being utilised in NHS Lanarkshire Mental Health, Learning Disability and Addiction Services, and
  • lessons on collaborating across services to support families and carers from Glasgow HSCP Family Wellbeing Hub

People who took part in the webinar shared some helpful ideas you might want to think about:

  • consider how important tone can be when interacting with patients and families, and how a professionals’ talk about sensitive subjects can impact people
  • the importance of the parent/ carer role in recovery and how frontline workers can include them without breaking confidentiality
  • exploring the services that are available to parents and carers
