Brief Insight seven: NHS Forth Valley: Community Buprenorphine prescribing pilot
Document Type
Reports
Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic led the NHS Forth Valley Substance Use Service to start a buprenorphine pilot. The idea came from the Scottish Prison Service, which was already using buprenorphine prescribing. The team wanted to offer a similar service in the community.
To support the pilot, the service created its own clinical guidance. The first stage focused on a small group of people who wanted to try buprenorphine and had simpler treatment needs. Early on, service leaders saw that staff needed help to adjust to the new approach. Training was arranged through the buprenorphine supplier. This helped staff learn new skills and gain confidence in delivering the service.
