Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R)

Ionising radiation is used widely help diagnose and treat conditions in

  • hospitals
  • dental care
  • clinics

It is also used in medical research. This is known as ‘medical exposure’.

Examples include diagnostic techniques such as x-ray and treatments such as radiotherapy.

We enforce the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) in Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government.
