Why the Scottish Approach to Change matters to communities

The Scottish Approach to Change is about staff, organisations and communities coming together as equal partners around the table. This approach will allow the voices and experiences of communities from across Scotland to influence the sustainability of care in Scotland for the long term.

A key part of this approach is inclusion. Real, lasting change comes when people and communities are involved at every stage. They share ideas, shape decisions and guide what happens next.

The term ‘communities’ includes anyone who uses or needs services, carers, families and other members of the public.

What the Scottish Approach to Change is

The Scottish Approach to Change is a simple way to improve health and care services in Scotland. It gives staff, partners and community members a clear way to make changes.

It combines proven methods to improve services into one easy to understand plan. It uses simple language so staff, partners and communities can confidently join in.

The Scottish Approach to Change helps people and organisations to:

  • plan and make changes with communities, not to them
  • use real evidence, learning and lived experience to guide decisions
  • focus on reducing inequalities and enhancing care for those who need it most
